Adriana Lecouvreur: Short Synopsis
Adriana, an actress, is a lover of Maurizio, a bannerman of the Count of Saxony. Maurizio, however, is the Count of Saxony, although he has kept this a secret from her. Adriana presents Maurizio with violets.
Maurizio was politically vulnerable and had a mistress relationship with Princess de Bouillon, from whom he received support. Maurizio tries to end the mistress relationship, but she refuses to accept it. She finds violets on Maurizio’s clothes. Maurizio is unable to resist and gives her the violets.
Adriana and the princess argue about Maurizio. The princess realizes that the violets Maurizio gave her were a gift from Adriana. The princess sends Adriana poisoned violets as a gift from Maurizio.
