Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, The Master-Singers of Nuremberg: Short Synopsis
Hans Sachs is a cobbler and a Meistersinger. He has taken a liking to Eva, who lives next door. She meets and falls in love with the young knight Walter.
Eva’s father, Pogner, is also a Meistersinger. He wants his daughter to marry the Meistersinger winner of the singing contest. Beckmesser, a Meistersinger, wishes to marry Eva. The young knight Walter decides to become a Meistersinger for Eva, but he fails the examination because he does not know the rules of singing.
They try to elope, but Sachs tactfully stops them. Sachs teaches Walter the rules of the meister singing. Walter completes the meister singing.
On the day of the singing contest, Beckmesser fails to sing because of Sachs’ trickery. Walter succeeds in singing. Everyone praises Meistersinger for defending German art.
