Don Carlos, Don Carlo: Short Synopsis
Spain and France are at war the people are exhausted. Pre-negotiated, the Spanish prince, Don Carlo, and the French princess, Elisabeth, were to be married. In the forests of France, Carlo and Elisabeth meet and fall in love. When negotiations began, the King of France wanted Elisabeth and the King of Spain to marry. Elisabeth accepts the marriage for the sake of her people.
In Spain, the marriage of Filippo II and Elisabeth takes place. In his despair, Carlo sees the ghost of his grandfather, Charles V. Carlo has a friend, Rodrigo, from Flanders, who is under religious oppression from Spain. Rodrigo believes that Carlo will save Flanders.
Rodrigo is trusted by Filippo II. Filippo II asks Rodrigo to explore the relationship between Carlo and Elisabeth.
Carlo acts arbitrarily for Flanders. Filippo II decides to exile or executes his son. Rodrigo dies for Carlo’s crimes. As he dies, he tells Carlo that Elisabeth is waiting for him in the convent.
Carlo bids farewell to Elisabeth and is about to depart for Flanders. Filippo II rides in on the spot and chastises them both. During the commotion, the ghost of Charles V drags Carlo into the tomb.
