I puritani, The Puritans: Short Synopsis
Events before the main story
Seventeenth-century England, Parliamentarians, and Royalists are at odds with each other. Elvira, whose father is a parliamentarian, and Arturo, a royalist, fall in love.
I puritani
Elvira’s father had approved of his daughter’s marriage to Riccardo, a parliamentarian. However, he was persuaded by Giorgio, Elvira’s uncle, to allow Elvira and Arturo to marry.
Elvira and Arturo’s wedding is about to take place. Arturo learns that Charles I’s widow, Enrichetta, is in a difficult position. He puts the veil of Elvira on the king’s widow they flee together. Riccardo overlooks their escape. Elvira loses her mind.
Arturo let Enrichetta escape to France. Pursued by the army, he finds Elvira, who has lost her mind. A pardon is granted to Arturo by the messenger. The two are blessed.
