Lucia di Lammermoor: Short Synopsis
Although their clans hated each other, Lucia and Edgardo fell in love. Edgardo dialogues with Lucia’s brother Enrico, who is hostile to him, and tries to get him to agree to marry Lucia, but Lucia refuses, fearing her brother. They exchange marriage vows in secret. Edgardo departs for France for political reasons.
While Edgardo is away, Enrico shows Lucia a fake Edgardo letter telling her of Edgardo’s change of heart. Lucia’s brother tightly insists that she enter into a political marriage. With the persuasion of her tutor, Lucia accepts.
On the day of the political marriage, the returning Edgardo appears and curses Lucia. On the newlywed floor, Lucia kills the man she married and appears in public with a broken spirit. (The “mad scene”) Lucia dies. Edgardo learns of her death and chooses to die himself.
